| EZ Home Tanning If you are interested in turning
your Deer Hide into a Wall Hanging, there is an easy method to hard
Tan the Hide yourself. This will result in a stiff tanned hide,
ideal for a rug or wall hanging.
The Hard tanning method is easy and can be done at Home: First
flesh the hide which involves removing the fat and meat from the
flesh side of the skin. Next in a large Plastic tote container with
a lid mix 2 gallons of water, one lb. of alum, ½ lb. of salt,
and ¼ lb. of washing soda. Mix and add the deer hide.
Keep the deer hide submerged for a week. Then remove hide and rinse
with cold water. Then mix a solution ½ LB of borax and 1
gallon of water and soak the hide for 3 to 4 days. Then rinse the
hide completely with water on both sides using a hose to remove
all chemicals. Spread the hide on a board.
Tack it with nails or tacks around the edges and dry the hide for
two weeks in a cool dry Place. Remove the nails, and enjoy your
trophy deerhide as a wall hanging or a rug. |
