Oils naturally evaporate from leather but this process is accelerated by exposing leather to extreme outdoor conditions, such as dry air or repeated wetting and drying cycles. Leather oils also help to protect leather from water and moisture. It is a good idea to give all your leather articles a good coating of Neatsfoot Oil at least once a year.
