Referred to as "boots" by outsiders, this Plains and Plateau Indian style of high topped moccasins were worn by women as early as the 1800s. The style became a signature look from the mid-1800s among the Comanche, Kiowa, Southern Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Apache. The main photo features a late reservation-period example by a Southern Arapaho woman. Apache men, too, wore a slightly altered knee-high moccasin.
Construction and decoration of these moccasins may differ from tribe to tribe.
